Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

 - and there is no sound

pulseaudio --kill

 - and now it works again!

(this might be not the correct way to correct the problem, but it shows
that the problem lies in the "old" pulseaudio process started in the
previous gnome session)
