Yoshi's workaround really helped, by the way, and now Richard's solution really solved the problem. I deleted the saved sessions (didn't even know I had some) and compiz started normally (without Yoshi's workaround). Issue can be closed, I think, but don't know which status would be appropriate

I got this after upgrading from 9.10. I have to select compiz effects (normal) in appearance. If I don't windows will be forced on the top right of the screen. I also have a large black X for a cursor. The compiz fix is temporary as on reboot its reset. Intel 945GM, Intel Core Solo 1.86gz --

The bug still occurs when I boot, and can be fixed in the described way – however, I can't fix it permanently, as it seems. Also of interest is that another user on this machine, who also runs compiz, doesn't experience this problems. -- After update to Ubuntu 10.04, display was weird
