I know I'd mentioned previously how updates that triggered
reconfiguration of grub 2 in Squeeze follows the safer and saner

As you can see from the comments on this bug this is something of a
pain.
I am guessing but i really think about a third of the problems with
booting MS installs that show up on the forums is due to the
installation of grub on the MS boot sector.
While I do not have that problem as I will not hav
unfortunately the situation is even worse than portrayed here so far ,
the order of the drives as displayed by the installer is not the same as
the BIOS order or the order as presented in Gparted (which I use for all

Just to add to Erick's comment, I am still seeing users being hit by
this problem on a daily basis. Although this report says 9 people

people are new users attracted to Ubuntu and it's not very good
advertising.
So, isn't it

I was just fiddling with Debian Squeeze trying to figure out an
unrelated issue but it required my changing from legacy grub to grub2,
and IMO their approach at this is much safer and saner. I posted a

This bug makes my dual-boot not work anymore. I've been trying all the
recommended fixes, but still have no luck. If anyone has any other
suggestions, please look over my thread and let me know. Thank you!

I wasn't taking umbrage, just hooking in - and following your posts with

Yes, the week of head-banging has included taking your advice, but at

Peter, for what it's worth my Ubuntu forum name is "kansasnoob". I in no
way meant the "noob shoes" comment to seem derogatory. I had not looked
at Linux since "Lindows" until just over two years ago so I am a noob.

@ Takkat, from what I've seen the "default" is that nothing is "ticked"
and in my experience most novices simply don't know what the various
alpha-numerical symbols mean in a drive/partition designation.
Surprisingly there is still confusion over the "h" or "s" at the
beginning and the need for UUI
To add a suggestion that can be included very quickly and easily and may
well be sufficient to unexperienced user:

grub:
It should recommend unexperienced users to keep the default setting
rather than mislead users "to install
I agree that bug #571893 is a duplicate of this one here. We do
experience the same trouble here with grub in wrong places when
upgrading.

I have to agree with Erick that the suggestion "if in doubt select all"
