I'm not sure if this is exactly the same problem but updating my Lucid caused a boot error stating that /dev/disk/by-uuid/ was missing. This was reproducable everytime with kernel 2.6.32.22. I'm not sure what kernel I was using prior to the update but during the update when I was prompted to keep
