Same problem for me. I have a Toshiba U305-S2804. I recently upgraded to
10.04 (via fresh install, not upgrade), and suddenly Ubuntu doesn't
recognise my external mic. In sound preferences, I have no option to
choose between inputs.
I upgraded ALSA to 1.0.23 last night (compiled from the source).
[Expired for alsa-driver (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for
60 days.]

Same here, Dell Inspiron 15, Trying to attach Rock Band microphone.
There are workarounds in Audacity and the computer recognizes it, but
there is no means of seeing it in the Sound Preferences. I like the
Sound Preferences having the microphone because I don't have to use all
of these workarounds
This is very likely hardware related. Can Steve Spence please execute
this terminal command: "apport-collect 577409" to provide us with more
info, and can Anthony please file a new one with this terminal command:
"ubuntu-bug alsa-base"? Thanks!

Okay, next thing to try is a model quirk. To do that, open
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
...and reboot. If it still does not work, try replacing "model=acer"
with "model=acer-dmic" or "model=acer-aspire". Reboot and try again
after eac

If you're still there, from what I can see, if you run the latest code (that
is, make sure there is no model=xxx option, then reinstall

It didn't seem like anyone was too interested in chasing down this
issue, so they canceled it. I just upgraded Ubuntu, and have not yet
checked to see if the issue still exists in this new version.

ok, got the third line installed, rebooted, plugged in my external mic,
but still, only the internal mic operates, and there is no option to

Yep, I found it. deleted the line with the model=acer option, rebooted,
then ran the three terminal commands, rebooted, now trying to find my
