It didn't seem like anyone was too interested in chasing down this
issue, so they canceled it. I just upgraded Ubuntu, and have not yet
checked to see if the issue still exists in this new version.

Same problem for me. I have a Toshiba U305-S2804. I recently upgraded to
10.04 (via fresh install, not upgrade), and suddenly Ubuntu doesn't
recognise my external mic. In sound preferences, I have no option to
choose between inputs.
I upgraded ALSA to 1.0.23 last night (compiled from the source).

If you're still there, from what I can see, if you run the latest code (that

it enables auto-switching, so if you plug the external mic in, it should

tried the other two options. option two was identical to option one.
Option 3 removed the external mic option.

options snd-hda-intel model=acer adds the mic 2 and line in options, but
also gives me "sound settings are incorrect". Trying the other options.

Okay, next thing to try is a model quirk. To do that, open
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
...and reboot. If it still does not work, try replacing "model=acer"
with "model=acer-dmic" or "model=acer-aspire". Reboot and try again
after eac
ok, got the third line installed, rebooted, plugged in my external mic,
but still, only the internal mic operates, and there is no option to
choose the external.

Same here, Dell Inspiron 15, Trying to attach Rock Band microphone.
There are workarounds in Audacity and the computer recognizes it, but
there is no means of seeing it in the Sound Preferences. I like the
Sound Preferences having the microphone because I don't have to use all
of these workarounds
