Tested with maverick 2.6.35-23-generic
The system will boot on AHCI without timing out on the disk (see caveat
below).
The current version of maverick is unusable on the Toshiba owing to
constant input events being required to enable the disk to operate. The
easiest way to generate these events

Title:
kernel boot
I recently updated Ubuntu (after checking all the boxes in the update
configuration window) and it solved the problem. Ubuntu launches after
about 1'30 without hitting any key and no 'busy' message displays.

Sorry, but for me, switching to compatible mode in the bios doesn't solve the
problem. I have A blue screen when booting Windows because it cant recognize
the device. Additionnaly, when you choose compatible mode, you have a non
optimised control of the sata harddrive...

This has fixed the boot. Windows on the other partition spent some time
installing new drivers however both partitions now boot normally.

While using Compatibility mode works fine for a netbook. Is this a
problem for more normal desktops?

This problem appeared in Karmic and has become worse on Lucid.
When booting the system from grub the system fails to boot and falls
back to BusyBox with the following error:
Gave up waiting for root device.
I had this exact same problem. go into your bios and change the:
sata controller mode back to compatibility instead of AHCI.
