I had a similar problem, but the screen was not completely blank. I could see
that the OS tried to tell me something but it was only pixels in size repeated
4 times. Removing vga=769 from grub (pressing e) solved the problem.
It turned out to be fstab telling me that it couldn't mount a volume

At the grub menu, please highlight your Lucid kernel and hit 'e'. Remove
quiet splash and replace it with nomodeset. Does this help? If not,
also try noacpi or xforcevesa.

YOu are with more luck than me.
On single user I also have a blank screen so single user is not a option
for me.
The solution for me was to boot another distribution and manually create
a XORG file...
I repeat the single mode should always be a console not a gui to solve
this type of

I see the blank screen after the boot splash. I was able to boot the
machine in a graphics failsafe mode and am trying to figure out how to
resolve the issue now.

I ran the command xrandr while in failsafe. 1024x768
I updated the file /etc/default/grub with the line
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768,640x480
