I had a similar problem. It turns out QGtkStyle tries to discover the theme with GConf, found that out by strace'ing qtconfig-qt4. So I installed gconf-editor to pull in GConf, then it worked. I agree it's a bug in QGtkStyle - at the very least, it should spit out that it can't load GConf. --
