i have a hp dv6 2128 el and i was getting sound from both loudspeaker and
headphones after plugging them into the audio jack,
James' quirck worked.
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1 enable_msi=1
in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
did the trick
10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS and this bug is still present in my same laptop.
The quirk still works great though. I would have thought this would
have been fixed in two years.

It does seem odd that a dell quirk would work for this model. This quirk can be
found (along with a confirmation) on this launchpad answer:

Another possible choice given on that answer is:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

That quirk seems odd. Shouldn't you be using a different quirk? The Dell
quirks tend to be tied to their BIOSes...
