Well, comming back to my message above, Ubuntu 12.04 might not be the
problem. I deleted ~/.local/backintime and then it worked. The files in
this directory might have been corrupted.
The error message is completely misleading and should be changed.
BiT V1.08 (1.07), Ubuntu 12.04.

And, the misleading error message is also when in Settings - Options
- Disable Snapshots when on Battery is switched on.
