I upgraded to Natty but I'm not sure how I should recheck this, grub2
being already installed... I'm in no way going to completely reinstall
this system ;-) but should I force a grub2 reinstallation ? Please
advise what you believe I should test, i.e. aptitude reinstall grub-pc
?

OK, this time the Asus disk setup survived a:
# aptitude reinstall grub-pc
# grub-install
# update-grub
So I believe the problem is fixed.
