Hello,
i think the same issue is affecting me although i have a different sony vaio
model. I just did a clean install + upgrade to today's state of ubuntu 10.04
kernel
2.6.32-24-generic
lspci output:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High
Definition Audio
I have fixed this now, I have wrote a comprehensive guide and this fix is
repeatable.
It works fine in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu including the latest versions as of
August 2010

Thanks all, I managed to come up with a work around
Sound is now working however:
1) Everytime you upgrade anything to do with the kernel you have to
undertake the workaround again
2) More crucially, system sounds don't seem to work now for example when
you get a warning or log on or log off.
