Sorry. Somehow I was left with the impression that now openjdk was installed by
default since Ubuntu 10.04 but now I can't reproduce it... I guess I made some
mistake and installed it myself.
Indeed it seems that ubuntu-meta has nothing to do with it :-)

that. ubuntu-meta is only for the Ubuntu metapackages, which do not
seem to be related to this bug.

It is likely a duplicate of Bug 553452.
I used the Launchpad PPA Lucid version to re-install sun-java6-plugin
and Synaptics to uninstall the icedtea plugin.
Perhaps a Canadian developer can get an epass for testing and not r
