Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. I've tried recreating this bug with Precise and was unable to, given the information you've provided. For me searching for paint returns both gpaint and kolourpaint, however the second problem (from the comments) is still there, searching for gmp does

I am having a similar problem with Synaptic 0.62.5 on Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. Using the All list and entering gmp in Quick Search I see several entries with gmp both starting with the text and containing the text, such as libgmp3-doc. However, I don't see libgmp3c2 which is installed. It is not
