After starting simple-scan as root (see Bug #587577), I tried to scan a
page as photo and as text, too. The results:
Photo: the scanner's head advances in "2 step forward + 1 step back"
style for about 10 centimeters, then moves back to the starting point as
if it's finished. To scan the whole surface it should move to the other
end of the ~30cm long flat bed. Meanwhile, the blank white page in the
simple-scan window gets filled with black color, as if the whole scanned
area was black. I tried setting the resolution to 600 dpi, at which
point the scanning had some other result than a big black page, but the
produced image is very distorted (see attached image). The scanned page
was a simple A4 printed page.
Text: the head moves forward about for about 5cm, the starts dancing
back and forth 0.5 cms on the same spot. Until I get bored, and press
the stop scanning button. If I set simple-scan to higher resolutions
(300-600-1200 dpi), the two lenghts (distance travelled initially,
distance of the back-forth jumping) gets shorter, at 1200 dpi, I can
barely see the head moving, just hear the sound of the electric motor
changing rapidly.
