You should reload your "X server resource database" with the following command:
xrdb ~/.Xresources
OR
xrdb any_Xresources_file
And your Xresources configs should be taken into account.

I would like to implement the changes suggested by
http://www.nedit.org/technotes/looks-1.php
which work on my Red Hat machine fine. Nedit on feisty seems to ignore
the .Xdefaults file.

I'm guessing there's some sort of problem with lesstif not picking up
system settings correctly. Instead of getting the font that all GTK and
Qt apps are using, I get some
Note: It was pointed out by nedit developers that "helvetica medium 12
points" is not a valid font name. I just wanted to clarify that I did
indeed try several other values for this field, including a number of
valid X11 font names that I know are available.
