I have the same issue with a different webcam.
I would like to add, that VLC fails to open the cam out of the box.
However, I found that the following command opens the cam just fine (only a few
Input/Output errors, but the image is fine):
vlc -I dummy v4l2:///dev/video0 --video-filter scene --n
Another way that makes it work in VLC (but not Cheese) out of the box is
running:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
and then running vlc
This will output a bunch of errors, but the video works.

I'm having a similar problem to that reported by Kabel. Cheese freezes
under Ubuntu 10.04 when I try to record video using a Microsoft Lifecam
Cinema HD webcam. Debug log attached.
