Yeah, this was an installer bug. You need to boot, stopping at the grub
menu, edit the boot entry, and change root=/dev/sda1 to root=/hda1. Once
booted, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, find the line with kopt_2_6 and
removed it, then run "sudo update-grub".

You are right. After a long time (at least 15 minutes) I got error
message "/dev/sda1 does not exist" from busybox. See attached screen
shot.

Same for me. I am running Efty Edge in vmware-player (installation from
Ubuntu 6.04 including all current updates). If I remove the kernel
options "splash" and "quiet" before booting with kernel 2.6.17-7-generic
it hangs after a message "Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...".
Vmware does not
