Public bug reported:

Have been reading about screen crash solutions and tired them all.
Seems the machine is still running but the screen is raster garbage and
only a reboot will fix.

I have only been able to reproduce this error 3 times now and it goes as
follows:

Reading a 34page PDF file with the Ubuntu10.04 inbuilt PDF reader (not
any special program installed) on a fully installed and updated machine.
When using the scroll bar to return to the beginning of the PDF (pages
scrolling faster and faster that only the "loading..." shows on the
page), when it returns to the beginning = raster crash, like the sync is
gone on the monitor (repeated raster pattern).

Machine needs a reboot. Reboot. Error after booting from Grub:

"Failed to initialise the nvidia kernal module" and "***Aborting***"

Exit to Grub error settings and tell it to use the backup version of the
xorg/nvidia settings, machine boots and runs fine for quite some time.
I have had the machine running for days no problem, use the PDF viewer
in this manner and it crashes within minutes.

When the screen returns (out of sync) the monitor (viewsonic 17inch)
does an auto adjust; vertical sync is fine but the horiz sync is out and
has to manually be adjusted.
