I no longer see a gap using the attached branch. Unfortunately the Tools
menus (if enabled) of gedit and rhythmbox don't contain any items, but
that's another issue I guess.

My Maverick installation is up-to-date, and I'm still seeing what I
described in #12:
* GNOME: no gap (never saw one), but after re-focusing or unminimizing,
the additional (empty) menu shows up.
* UNE: gap upon application start (see screenshot in #12), and after re-
focusing or unminimizing,
