I don't remember when this was fixed, but Empathy has long switched back
to using color status icons, and the messaging menu now uses color
status icons too.

Aren't those icons intended to be used on dark backgrounds, not white?
Empathy's background color should either match the one of the panel or
use the dark versions of the icons.

anyway instead of using the transparent color to draw the symbols
inside the bubble, a solid dark color could be used.

Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. This is a
