All of a sudden, vlc now does open the stream:

I suppose the problem is caused by the package livemedia-utils (the
live555.com streaming media code, installed version: 2010.02.10-1).

That's a problem with liblivemedia, yes. Since it is linked statically,
VLC and Mplayer would need to be recompiled as well. So in a sense
they're also buggy.
