problems. But 8.04 would install and run without any problems.

Same problem i found with Ubuntu 10.10 after installing updates and reboot.
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory

This means that on such machines, I cannot install anything newer than
8.04, and cannot ever upgrade to a more modern level.
I suspect it has something to do with the new GRUB boot-loader.
