Sure, Ryan. Sorry I couldn't help more :-(

Title:
byobu should have an option to disable 256-color mode

Yeah, that's exactly what I ended up doing, once I figured out that the
~/.byobu/profile would completely override the system one.
Thanks for your attention on this.

Okay, Ryan... I haven't found a good way to unset these items in your
.screenrc.
In the meantime, do this:
$ rm ~/.byobu/profile
$ cp /usr/share/byobu/profiles/common ~/.byobu/profile
$ vi ~/.byobu/profile
(comment out those lines)
This should keep you from having to re-roll your own deb.
Thanks for the screenshots.
I need to think about how to solve this for you, while maintaining
functionality for everything else. Removing those lines for everyone
will negatively affect the console colors for anyone not using konsole.

Well, I can just fix it by editing my ~/.byobu/profile, and you could
forget about it and hope the KDE folks eventually fix Konsole.

I suppose. But I'm not sure what to set them to.

I'm attaching screenshots. This first one is byobu in its default
configuration, showing the lack of bold colors.

Hi Ryan,
Can you post a screen shot so that I can try to reproduce this? I just
installed Konsole inside of Gnome, and I think, perhaps, I see what
you're talking about, but I'm not sure.
Thanks.
