Fix worked fine before it was reverted (Dell E6510). What do you need

@Marc, I don't really know how your system managed to screw up so badly that
you don't even have a /proc/asound/cards file - perhaps you installed a
non-working ALSA driver override? Switched to OSS? Perhaps there are some hints
in dmesg of what can have happened?

I have a Dell Lattitude e6410 with 10.04.1 and the proposed kernel,
2.6.32-26-generic i686. There is no input device listed under the sound
preferences, so microphone doesn't work. For completeness, I tried to
