I have the same problem on a Lenovo Z61m running feisty, as soon as I
switch user the synaptic touchpad stops working, however the ibm "red-
pointer" stick still works.
I do have a work around for it though.
Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 then Ctrl-Alt-F9

This problem is new to Feisty for my mom's laptop. User switching worked fine
in Edgy.
In feisty, the nipple mouse works, the synaptic touchpad is completely
unresponsive.
Additionally, in synclient, after it becomes unresponsive, it is also
inaccessible by synclient.

As I said above, a simple workaround is, when it happens, to switch back
to the old session and forth to the new one - it also seems to me that
the problem does not manifest itself if you move the mouse while
switching session.

I can confirm the (touchpad) mouse in the new user's session does not
work. Any workarounds/fixes for this (whithout plugging in an USB
mouse)?

I should also say that I either updated Edgy yesterday morning or the
night before, so this should be recent. There are a bunch of updates
pending that haven't been applied, however:
