Here is a workaround:
Cimi mvo: the engine does g_object_get_data(G_OBJECT (widget),
transparent-bg-hint)
Cimi so transparent-bg-hint to TRUE

The workaround suggested in #3 (setting 'transparent-bg-hint' to True)
didn't do the trick for me on Ubuntu 10.10.
