I am not sure how bringing Gnome desktop instead of xfdesktop have to do with
any application actually.
What Gnome desktop is doing behind, before starting xfdesktop, in the first
place? (I think I see the same thing happening even on booting up machine,
after I log in to Xfce desktop). First

installed the Gnome destkop? If you have not installed ubuntu-desktop
along with Xubuntu, it should not be able to run Gnome desktop.
