I now believe this bug was caused by a conflict with a non-standard
package. I had the Firefox-4-daily ppa and FF4 installed, which brought
it's own xulrunner (-2.0 and -1.9.3 transitional), which mostly likely
have caused this. Just uninstalled both, and gecko-based yelp started
working again. ->
A recent update seems to have fixed this for me

I have the same problem for a couple of days. Reinstalling yelp or
xulrunner-1.9.2 or -1.9.3-dbg didn't help. Also there is no
"compreg.dat" in /usr/lib/xulrunner*, which is good, as this was
mentioned as cause in previous bug reports for yelps very helpful error
message.
Haven't diagnosed the iss
