Ok I installed the 24/9 daily build, the bug appears to fixed
(2.6.35-22-generic)
and the lastest upstream kernel has it fixed too. (2.6.36-999-generic)

I feel that the bug is in the kernel module rt2860sta as installing the
latest drivers from Ralink seems to improve the situation (the wireless is
able to connect every time but drops out after a minute)
