The package in debian has been fixed thanks to a new fontconfig package. The
change in edgy wasn't possible in october (edgy was frozen).
Lilypond 2.8 is now in debian unstable, and will be included in feisty.

Looks like this may be fixed in Debian... they made the same changes
that I did, plus a couple of extras.
Although, I still get the $&@*$ Ghostscript error.

Progress!
The mftrace thing was silly... the required Python library was included
in the mftrace source, I just hadn't installed it.
mftrace should be modified to depend on tetex-bin | texlive-base, but
that's for another bug (specifially, #65170).
Lilypond doesn't compile because of G++ 4 issue
Converting to PNG...ERROR: /unregistered in --glyphshow--
Operand stack:
Execution stack:
%interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- false 1 %stopped_push 1 3 %oparray_pop
Okay, so I've downloaded the Lilypond sources... it requires mftrace to
build.
The binary mftrace package wants tetex instead of texlive, but I can
compile it from source. The problem is runtime: it tries to do "import
afm" (Adobe Font Metrics, according to Google), but I can't find a
suitable AFM
Oh... sorry. I thought that it was just a dependency issue.
I can also try to get Lilypond to build... I don't have a whole lot of
free time these days, but I'll see if I can spot any simple problems.

The fix is not trivial at all, since lilypond doesn't build under edgy. The
latest debian package fails to build too.
I'll try to spend some time on this.

This is a trivial fix (seriously, one line in the .deb's control file),
but I don't have the necessary permissions.
Please help me, O mighty MOTUs!
