This could be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg- server/+bug/561734 another bug about failing to initialize Clutter. I can reproduce that issue as well. It may be specific to nouveau users. I do not have these issues on another up to date Maverick machine which uses the
