Ah, after throwing out all the packacking/OS/gdb bits, it still runs two
minutes for me when Firefox crashes. The reason is that it takes an
awful long time to bzip2-compress the core dump.

Firefox and a stock HP/Compaq Presario 2200. It's not new, but the
processor well within the GHz range.
I'd give the renice a whirl, but I disabled apport. I'm tired of
fighting this...

Several minutes? Ugh, that sucks... which application crashed at that
time, and what kind of machine do you have?
Does
sudo renice 19 `pidof apport`
help to make the machine usable again?
