I've enabled it at first, but I got bugreports from users that don't use
vdpau capable hardware that mplayer behaved badly, so I've disabled it.
so in order to enable this, we'd need some more thorough testing and
investigation of the issue.

IIRC exactly as you proposed, by editing the vo option in the config
file
