I have the same problem on Maverick beta, and it's can be reproduced on a
VMware machine:

How to reproduce:
1. Download Maverick beta ubuntu-10.10-beta-server-i386.iso from
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/download
2. Boot it on VMware machine (mine is VMware
i recently compiled and installed the maverick 2.6.35.2 kernel on a
server running jaunty. i believe that i am encountering the same (or a
very similar) issue. when booted with the new kernel, the server hangs
with a kernel oops when lshw is run, apparently while probing the
Framebuffer device.
