What about make it to do what startx on windows is doing, it is mixing the functinality of both, i understand that there would by conflict if i'm in the folder where is firefox file and also i have firefox installed, but i recomend to give openvt bigger priority and if someone want to force to use

It is ridiculous that open points to openvt instead of something like xdg-open. I'm going to have to request a concrete example as well. Here we are touting that Ubuntu is a user-friendly Linux distribution and open doesn't even do what most users probably expect. -- You received this bug

Sorry, I also forgot to mention that the Brainstorm idea link given above no longer works. So the discussion needs to happen (at least) here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/619913

I have to bump this again. Personallly, I've been using bash alias open=xdg-open for years. It's EXTREMELY useful and convenient. And I do really want to stress that: even though I generally avoid non-standard aliases for the command line (just so that my habits won't depend too much on a widely

I second that open should link to xdg-open at the first place. If /bin/open was not specified by POSIX to have a special meaning, this very generic command should be used to simplify a users life. To use open for /bin/openvt is less intuitive than openvt. And to use open for just opening

Thank you for your suggestion. open (/bin/open to be precise) is already presently used as an alternative symlink for openvt (part of kbd package), and this may well mean there are also existing scripts that assume open is openvt as well. -- open should be an alias to xdg-open

This bug is being marked invalid for the reason given above. Since the open symlink is already in use, it would be better for those users who prefer this to mean something else to try changing it themselves. It is possible it will cause fails in the system when changed. ** Changed in: xdg-utils

Yes I noticed that. And I see that this makes it more difficult. But I still think it should be changed. About open being a symlink to openvt: I think that is not a good idea. open is a very general command-name and shouldn't be taken by something such specific as openvt (i.e. execute a given

But it shouldn't have been a symlink to openvt in the first place. Should I fill in a separate bug report about open being a symlink to openvt? Or is the general argument here: Because it was done wrongly in the past and people might have relied on that, we can not fix that anymore because it is

I have filled in an idea on Ubuntu brainstorm: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/25739/ Maybe we can see there how much people think this is more important than to keep the current symlink to openvt. Not sure though if this is the best place to do a voting about it. -- open should be an alias

Brainstorm is an excellent place to discuss this further. As for the current symlink being wrong, it seems to a choice that affects MacOSX users more than others. For those who have not used MacOSX, they will not be expecting the same function you are. -- open should be an alias to xdg-open
