Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 10.04 it is impossible to change volume by using the hardware
volume buttons once the computer goes to screensaver.

For example, you're listening to music at night on your USB headphones
with a great volume control thing on the cord, and you need to adjust
the volume slightly, first you must get up and log in again, just to
push the volume button, and the light from your monitor kills your eyes.

Or maybe someone leaves his music on too loud on his laptop and then
leaves, and you want to turn it down, but you don't know the password,
so the only thing you can do is turn the whole thing off.

Anyway, hardware volume buttons need to work in screensaver/lock screen.
