With some embarrasment I must confess that this particular problem was
seemingly solved some time ago by a to-me-unknown-at-the-moment Ubuntu
update for 10.10. I have for some time now have had no visible display
signs of the settings being incorrect.
I did run 'apport-collect 621756'

Thanks for your report. The log shows the vesa driver in use, and the
EDID transferred seems ok. Can you please attach an Xorg log from the
mga driver? Please also run "apport-collect 621756" to have other
information added.
