This problem went away in Ubuntu 6.06LTS (Dapper) with the following steps:
1) copy from a known good distribution the following files:
/etc/cups/command.types
/etc/cups/pstoraster.convs
2) /etc/init.d/cupsys stop
3) /etc/init.d/cupsys start
It may be that restarting cupsys wou
