same problem appears on my daughters compaq deskpro ENS C400 with the
above named onboard soundchip. I installed her Xubuntu 6.10 due tue
performande reasons, as the machine is not the most modern stuff. But I
got It from my work for free, because we changed the PC's in the

Try this
$sudo modprobe snd-es18xx
$alsamixer
If you get sliders to move around, it is working.
$sudo nano /etc/modules
If that worked add "snd-es18xx" to /etc/modules so its loaded when you boot up

Same problem here. Didn't work in Dapper, doesn't work in Edgy. Note
that sounds works in Windows 2000, so it's not a BIOS or contact issue.
