So, when I disabled acpid, the system booted just fine, but I would get
an error at startup about something not being able to access acpi stuff.
(I'll post back with the real error)
Now, after some updates, I re-enabled acpid and the system still boots,
but after gnome starts, I still get the

I have the same issue on my laptop. I haven't tried reinstalling or
disabling acpid yet, but I will report back after disabling acpid to
confirm whether that works for me.

I found out the problem only happen when acpid is running.
So, I did:
$ cd /etc/init.d/
$ update-rc.d -f acpid remove
Now, my system boot fine in multi-user mode.
