Strange, this morning when I started empathy IRC the contacts were gone
again. Of course, now I know where to look for them it is not such a
problem, but it still doesn't seem right.

Update on this. It turned out that for some reason the default width
for the contact section of the window had gone to zero for all IRC
channels I use. I resized those sections with the mouse and they stayed

Interestingly enough, the empathy window now also automatically expands
when I type in a long line of text, so that it always stays on a single
line, and I can't shrink it again until I have pressed "enter".
