My session was still running netbook-launcher, which did nothing (no
longer exists?). When I added /usr/bin/unity to my startup applications
I get a grey background.

unity -p is for easier debugging and is not expected to always work
(does not work for me) does the problem also happen when you select
ubuntu netbook edition from gdm screen?

How did you start untiy? Via the normal session-selection from the gdm-
login screen? Or via a terminal?

Upgrade - Maverick got rid of netbook-launcher, so I had no desktop --
just a Gnome panel.
