I also had an issue with installing grub, I attempted to install it on a
different partition than it initially suggested. I have a 150G drive
partitioned in 4 partitions, 47M dell, 130G winXP, 10G Ubuntu, 2G swap.
I also have a boot manager multibooting (system commander 8) and this is

It works for many people, so you need to provide much more information.
/var/log/syslog (or /var/log/installer/syslog if you've managed to boot
into the new system) would be a good start.
