Usually if you have trouble installing something, using aptitude instead
of apt-get at the command line can help fix things. Aptitude has better
dependency handling than apt-get, which I believe synaptic and adept use
underneath.

This is on a spare laptop. I'm going to try to install it from the cd
image (instead of upgrading), to see if the problem (as well as a few
