This is a good question, don't worry.
The .menu file is for the old Debian menu system. GNOME, KDE, Xfce and
other modern desktop environments all use the .desktop file. In Debian
there has been discussion whether to deprecate .menu files at all.

Thanks David. Sorry for the diff, it was my first packaging related patch, and
I did not know how to proceed. With mentoring, I have found it out, it won't
happen anymore.
Just one last noob question: shouldn't the menu entry be changed too to have
Geography instead of Geoscience for consistency
Please, don't introduce useless deltas between Debian and Ubuntu.
I just fixed this in Debian's git. Will land in Ubuntu as soon as I
upload it and a sync happens.
