This bug was filed aegainst an old, no longer supported kernel. The sound
subsystem has undergone significant change since that time. Please follow the
directions below and file a new bug and include your specific hardware and
release information if you continue to have a sound problem.
I have experienced this issue with any ICH chipset. The main speaker
volume is barely audible from 2m away under any linux distro but it
sounds like a disco under windows. All outputs are set to 100% on amix
and the problem is desktop-independent. I believe it all started with
the 2.6 kernels and A

Sebastian's bug -- orthogonal to the one in this bug report since his
hardware uses both a different dsp and a different codec -- at least
from the driver side is fixed in alsa-driver 1.0.13. The patches were
sent to kernel-team@ in early October.
I suspect Dino's issue, which may also affect Seba
Try for instance logging in to a Failsafe X session, and run "aplay
/usr/share/sounds/question.wav" from there.
I am less sure Dino and Sebastion have the same bug, since Dino's sound
is ok until login.

Issue on a Toshiba Satellite L100.
A friend has a similar laptop in the L100 range and doesn't have the issue.
alsamixer is reporting a generic chipset on my machine, but a realtek
chipset on
I suggest you go through all mixer settings. In Volume Control, go to
Preferences to make all tracks visible, then turn everything up. You can
also try "alsamixer" from the command line.
I hope you at least can get a cd and try Ubuntu 6.10 when it's released.
