I could solve this problem by taking the battery out and plugging it back after
a while. The status is detected correctly. Moreover, the battery is charging to
100% now.

Before I switched to Linux Ubuntu, I had used Windows where I chose an option
to the case when my battery is charged up to 80% to maximize LIFETIME of the
battery like it is described here:
I've got the same machine (Lenovo Z360) with the same problem. While not
plugged, acpi says that the battery status charging.
