use unity or gnome-shell? Do you just get a white screen, does it stop
updating, or..?

It looks like mutter is segfaulting on startup, can you try running
mutter --replace ~/muttercrash.txt 21
from a terminal and attach ~/muttercrash.txt to this bug so we can see what is
going on?
